A Posy for a Lady
Life for Dora was settling into some sort of order. It was almost twelve months since she had seen Jack put into the cold dark earth. Dora would never forget her Jack, he was still a big a part of her life, but she had realised some time ago that life has to go on. She still visited the grave every week, and sometimes all three of his sons would be with her, this seemed to Dora to be quite in order. She still missed Jack terribly, but the raw hurting pain had settled into an acceptance that she was without him and always would be. The anger had been replaced by thankfulness for the years spent with her husband.
Dora knew in part why she felt this way, Jack was no more than a treasured memory now, but a new life had come into the family by the name of John Reynolds. He had come as soothing balm into their lives when all else had seemed lost to her.
John was his son, not hers, but as the time had gone on he had become like her own, a gift from his father. This was how Dora saw it, and the best part of all, was the fact that all three boys seemed to be tied by an invisible thread, joined in a wonderful harmony to one another.
Fay had always seen the benefit of the three boys being so intertwined. The only person who seemed to be against this brotherly union was Annabelle, but it seemed that she was alone in her spitefulness. Her bitching constantly about the new member of the family was tolerated, but only up to a point. Her carping comments about John had begun to rankle with every member of the Reynolds family.
In due time news of the Major’s improving health was circulating around the village. John would come home and say that the Major had been sitting in the Summer House, or at times he would take a turn around his large gardens and woodland area.
One evening, John had surprised Dora when he brought a lovely posy of sweet smelling pink roses; sent to her by the Major, with a note asking her if she would be kind enough to allow him to pay her a visit next week.
Dora had taken the posy and the note, and wondered why The Major wanted to visit her. It seemed an intriguing request and certainly out of the blue, but Dora would be happy for a visit from the gent. After all she had always admired his courage and fortitude, albeit his bad choice in choosing such a tart as Cynthia Twig for his second wife. Nevertheless, by all accounts he was suffering for his bad choice. Some said the Major was still pining for Miranda.
But all else aside, it couldn’t be denied that he was a very handsome, but sad gentleman.
Next Saturday morning would suit her fine. She would send a message accepting the request with John the next morning.
